Professional sports massage can provide an athlete with
several performance advantages.
Regular sports massage can:
- Reduce the chance of injury, by relieving stress
points in muscles, before they result in restrictions
or spasm;
- Improve range of motion and muscle flexibility, resulting
in improved power and performance;
- Shorten recovery time between workouts;
- Maximize the supply of nutrients and oxygen through
increased blood flow;
- Facilitate the body’s regular processes for
recovery from exercise;
- Decrease performance anxiety and sharpen mental focus.
In combination with hydrotherapy (heat and ice), rest,
and therapeutic exercises, sports massage will definitely
help to facilitate the healing process from minor muscle
strains and ligament sprains; inflammation responses
(such as tendonitis); overuse syndromes (such as tendinosis
and shin splints) and general fatigue.

the bottom of the foot; "fascia" is a type of connective
tissue, and "itis" means "inflammation".
Treatment: Roll tennis
ball under foot to massage joints fascia in order to break
apart scar tissue and relieve inflammation. Move up to harder
object like golf or lacrosse ball if pain persists. Stretch
calves and Achilles frequently. Also use ice cup method (freeze
Dixie cup filled _ with water, then tear cup just below ice
level and use to ice/massage). Seek doctor’s prescription
for a sleeping boot if pain still continues.
Symptoms: shins are tender
to the touch, painful when running, swelling on shin (rare).
Diagnosis: Shin splints-The
most common cause is inflammation of the periostium of the
tibia (sheath surrounding the bone). The injury is an overuse
injury and can be caused by running on hard surfaces, running
on tiptoes and sports where a lot of jumping is involved. If
you over pronate then you are also more susceptible to this
injury.
Treatment: Rest, the sooner

frequently. Run on softer surfaces. If pain persists seek doctor’s
advice for possible bone fracture.
Symptoms: Achilles tendon
is sore and/or in pain during exercise. Achilles tendon is
swollen or there is a crunching sound when the tendon is flexed
back and forth.
Diagnosis: Achilles Tendonitis-
inflammation of Achilles tendon, the largest and strongest
tendon in the human body.
Treatment: Rest and ice.
Do not overstretch Achilles when it is inflamed. Achilles tendonitis
can be one of the most crippling common injuries in running.
If it is not treated properly with rest and attention it can
lead to a rupture and in some rare cases surgery.
Symptoms: Soreness in
front of knee down to connection of shin bone (tibia) during
and after running.
Diagnosis: Patellar Tendonitis-
tenderness and soreness caused by overuse to the knee cap (patellar)
down to the shin (tibia) connection.

as well as quad stretching and strengthening exercises will
help to improve the ailment. |
